We're going through some nasty heat right now. This kind of heat is no joke and the National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Advisory. But unfortunately, some people don't have a cool place to go.

That's why Rochester Public Transit is offering free rides during this extreme heat to help get people out of the heat and into a cool, air conditioned place, even if it's only for a little while.

Free Rides on Rochester Public Transit

RPT has done this before during other extreme heat advisories. If I'm remembering right, they'll do this during extreme cold advisories too.

The initiative is called 'A Cool Place to Be' and it's in effect now (it started Monday, June 29th) through Thursday, July 2nd, the same dates as the Extreme Heat Advisory.

If you're caught out in the heat and need to get into a cool place, the City of Rochester writes that all you need to do is let the bus driver know that you "need to escape the heat and cool down, and no fare will be charged to board the bus."

This doesn't mean that all rides are free. If you're taking the bus to commute, you're still charged the same, usual fee. These free rides are only for those in need of an escape from the heat.

The city also writes that they will keep their website and social media accounts updated with any changes.
