New Detour Starts Monday at Hwy. 52/I-90 Interchange Southeast of Rochester

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- One of the most commonly-traveled routes at the Interstate 90 and Hwy. 52 interchange southeast of Rochester will be closed to motorists for over a month.

The closure and detour come as work continues on the third and final year of a project to transform the busy interchange.

Offramp from Westbound I-90 to Northbound Hwy. 52 to Close Monday

Starting Monday the ramp connecting westbound I-90 to northbound Hwy. 52 will close. 

A news release issued by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) says crews will be re-aligning the ramp to “improve safety and traffic flow for vehicles traveling onto northbound Highway 52.”

Installation of a double box culvert, which will carry water for the Badger Run Creek through the area, and improved lighting will also occur during the closure. 

Detour Route

The detour will route motorists eight miles west of Hwy. 52 to the I-90/Hwy. 63 interchange in Stewartville. 

From there, drivers will follow Hwy. 63 north to Hwy. 52 in Rochester. MnDOT anticipates the detour to be in place until late August. 

July Opening Eyed for Flyover Ramp

Meanwhile, MnDOT says a flyover ramp to connect southbound Hwy. 52 to eastbound I-90 is scheduled to open this month. 

The ramp bypasses a left turn that has been against an increasing traffic volume in recent years. 

Construction is also continuing on a new westbound I-90 overpass at the interchange. Crews completed a new I-90 eastbound overpass last year.
