Elderly Rochester Woman Scammed Out Of Thousands Of Dollars

Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Another scam in Rochester involving an elderly victim.
Police Capt. Casey Moilanen says the 76-year-old woman told an investigator she received a message from a Facebook friend last month about a “special assistance program. “
The message indicated the friend had received a $200,000 grant - after paying a $15,000 “fee. “
The Rochester woman eventually sent four payments to a South Carolina address between Oct 13 and Nov 20. She told a family member what she had been doing and decided to call police on Saturday. By then, the woman had been scammed out of $27,000.
Moilanen says it’s believed the scammer had hacked the Facebook account of the woman’s friend and then sent her the message.
